15+ years designing accessible cycling routes for pensioners across Latvia's coastal regions, with deep expertise in flat-terrain routes like the Liepāja beach and lake loop.
From transport planning to specialized coastal cycling expertise
Andris started his career in 2009 as a junior transport planner with Riga City Municipality. His early work focused on cycling infrastructure, and he quickly developed a passion for making routes accessible to everyone—not just young, athletic riders. After completing his Transport Engineering degree at Riga Technical University in 2011, he spent seven years with the Latvian Tourism Development Agency conducting extensive field research on cycling routes across the Baltic coast.
His shift toward senior-focused cycling came from a personal place. When his own parents retired to Liepāja in 2015, Andris realized how few routes were genuinely designed with older cyclists in mind. Most routes ignored the real concerns of pensioners: surface quality, rest facilities, emergency access, and realistic gradient changes. That gap motivated him to dive deeper into the research.
Since joining cannebergesatoka Digital Solutions Ltd in 2020, Andris has become the go-to expert for detailed analysis of flat coastal routes. He combines biomechanical research with hands-on testing to identify routes that balance enjoyment with genuine safety for older adults. His approach isn't theoretical—he rides every route he recommends, often multiple times across different seasons and weather conditions.
Today, he's recognized across Latvia's tourism sector as an authority on accessible cycling infrastructure. But what matters most to him? Making sure that pensioners can experience the joy of riding without unnecessary risk or discomfort.
Specialized knowledge across senior cycling and coastal route design
Assessment and mapping of terrain for zero-gradient or minimal-slope routes. Specialization in beach paths, lakeside loops, and paved surfaces suitable for all cycling abilities.
Designing routes with older adults in mind—accounting for stamina, balance, visibility, and recovery time. Real-world testing with pensioner groups to validate routes.
Deep knowledge of the Liepāja beach and lake loop, including seasonal conditions, surface maintenance, rest points, and safe access routes. Conducted detailed accessibility audits since 2015.
Evaluation of cycling infrastructure for safety, maintenance, and accessibility. Identifying gaps in facilities, emergency services access, and route continuity.
Strategic planning for sustainable cycling tourism in coastal regions. Collaboration with municipalities and tourism boards on route promotion and maintenance.
Guidance on selecting bikes and setups for coastal riding. Understanding how equipment choice impacts comfort and safety on different route types.
Philosophy and methodology in route assessment
I don't design routes from an office. Every recommendation comes from riding—sometimes dozens of times across different seasons, weather, and times of day. That's how you catch the details that matter: where water collects after rain, which sections feel rough under your tires, where headwinds slow you down, where the light fades first in winter.
The Liepāja beach loop I'm known for? I've ridden it over 40 times since 2015. Spring when the winds pick up. Summer in the heat. Autumn when leaves cover potential hazards. Winter when ice appears on the shaded sections. Only then can you honestly say it's safe for pensioners.
"Most cyclists are young and fit. They don't notice what makes a route genuinely difficult for someone who's 65, recovering from an injury, or just wants a peaceful afternoon ride."
I focus on factors that actually matter: Can you ride this without pain? Are rest areas genuinely useful? Can emergency services reach you if something happens? Is the surface smooth enough? Can you see oncoming traffic?
Theoretical ideal conditions don't help anyone. A flat route that's poorly maintained is worse than a gently rolling route with smooth pavement. A scenic route with no rest facilities is dangerous. I prioritize what works in the real world.
